Pain: Narratives and Ethics - Joletta Belton

Listen as Joletta Belton, an internationally recognized pain advocate, discuss pain through a lens of narratives and ethics

Joletta Belton's Bio -

I have lived with chronic pain since early 2010. My pain started with a missed step off a fire engine and a tweak in my hip. That missed step led me down an unexpected path of ongoing, worsening pain, years of failed treatments, and a forced medical retirement from the firefighter paramedic career that defined me. My desire to understand my pain led me back to graduate school, where I earned my MSc in human movement and studied pain science.

I am now an advocate for advancing the integration of the lived experience into the study, research, and treatment of pain, which led to my position as co-chair of the Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy, a task force of the International Association for the Study of Pain. I am an author of peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters and am the first Patient and Public Partnerships Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. I have also been a patient partner on numerous research studies in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

All my advocacy work started with my blog, MyCuppaJo.com, where I make sense of my pain experiences - and all that comes packaged with pain - through science and stories. I also share my story and lived expertise at professional conferences and workshops and in classrooms around the world.
